Why New Orleans?
This is the location of the very first RAF Burtonwood Association reunion back in 1987. Aldon and Sue Ferguson had travelled to the San Antonio the previous year to meet up with the already well established BAD#2 (Warton) Association. Aldon had written to the local press stating that he was in town and looking for ex Burtonwood personnel. This did not go down too well with the BAD#2 group as they generally did not like Burtonwood. This was because the Commander of Base Air Depot Area (BADA), Brigadier General Isaac ‘Ike’ Ott pushed everyone in his command to maximize the output from the three Base Air Depots for the war effort. The Warton personnel thought he was too hard on their CO, Col Tom Scott, to the extent that when they wrote Burtonwood they wrote it ‘burtonwood’ with a small ’b’ deliberately! Small minded yes but old conflicts seem to last a long time.
Anyhow, several ex Burtonwood personnel did show up including Verne Hall, Jean’s husband and Cathy’s father, plus John Bado, Tom Conley and others. On the strength of our meeting we agreed to go ahead and set up an Association and inaugurate it at New Orleans the following year. This we did and the photo above is of part of the 30 plus who attended. Dewey Ott had contacted Aldon shortly before the reunion and became President. Tom Conley had served under Dewey in Flight Test and he became Treasurer. Aldon’s sister, Molly, was then living in Alabama and joined us with her daughter Chelsea and Molly became US Membership Secretary. We great time in New Orleans and a very social time with our new found friends, many of whom had not seen each other for years. The rest is history, we have held a US reunion every year since them and one in the UK every two years with the first one being at Hoole Hall Hotel in Chester in June 1988. That year the US reunion was hosted by John and Jean Bado in Oklahoma City. Oh Yes! We also smoothed our differences with the members of the BAD#2 Association and became firm friends. Sadly that Association has ceased to exist due to lack of numbers, as Warton closed in 1945 and that was the end of American occupation there.
So, this year is the 30th anniversary of the beginning of our Association; we have achieved a lot and will continue to do so. Therefore the whole Board of Officers invite you to join us for this celebration and commemoration. We look forward to seeing you in September.
